Lullabye
By Patricia Lafayllve

Sleep now, my child and I’ll sing you this song
All of our family’s women were strong
Some softly some sweetly though they have passed on
Our family’s disir will ever live long.

Guard you and guide you disir always will
Help keep your hearth fires warm and still
Protection and wisdom the gifts that they give
Our ancestresses will help us to live.

I see in your eyes the sparkle and shine
Of your great-grandmother, long-lived and fine
First woman who sat in a principal’s chair
She taught many children to always be fair.

Sleep now, my child and I’ll sing you this song
All of our family’s women were strong
Some softly some sweetly though they have passed on
Our family’s disir will ever live long.

Follow your dreams, child, the disir advise
Lessons from our lives will help you grow wise
Remember our stories we ask that you do
Your grandmothers watching will help you be true.

Hard work will help you through harsh times ahead
Even a waitress keeps her family fed
With laughter at picnics remember to play
Great-grandmother whispered at end of the day.

Sleep now, my child and I’ll sing you this song
All of our family’s women were strong
Some softly some sweetly though they have passed on
Our family’s disir will ever live long.

Some fought for freedom, some came from the boat
Grandmothers stood up and got us the vote
Some spoke their opinions through dangers ahead
And some gently kissed us and sent us to bed.

Listen in silence and you’ll hear their song
Stories keep memories living and strong
They’ll wrap you in comfort there’s no need to weep
Lie back on your pillow they’ll send you to sleep.

Sleep now, my child and I’ll sing you this song
All of our family’s women were strong
Some softly some sweetly though they have passed on
Our family’s disir will ever live long.
